I’m quite addicted to Twitter at the moment (even Peacock Carter are on it!), and since posting my previous entry on Twitter etiquette, I’ve noticed a few things that really bug me when I use Twitter.
My take on bad Twitter etiquette
So, here’s my take on bad Twitter etiquette.
- Begging for retweets (RTs). Retweeting is the Twitter equivalent of forwarding an email to your friends. I’ve seen plenty of tweets asking for ‘retweets’, and do you know what I do? I ignore them, like I’m guessing most other Twitter users do. If people read your tweet and think it’s worth retweeting, they’ll do it.
- Begging for more followers. I really don’t care if you or someone you follow needs another 10 followers to make it to a round number, and I’m sure I’m not alone.
- Repeatedly posting the same link to a new blog entry (or website): particularly annoying if you keep tweeting it as ‘new’, when I’ve already seen the same link 3 times that morning.
- Abusing popular tags on Twitter. For the uninitiated, ‘hashtags’ on Twitter allow you to categorise your tweet, allowing others to find updates related to a particular theme. Some users abuse this in an attempt to gain more followers, and it’s both irritating and utterly against the concept of Twitter. This seems particularly bad on Twitter during conferences, as some users (especially if there’s a live feed of Twitter updates on a projector).
- Misusing the Follow Friday tag (#followfriday). The Follow Friday tag lets your followers on Twitter see which other users you recommend they follow. It’s a weekly thing, so it’s just annoying if you list everybody you follow each week. Simply wait until next week!
Enough of a rant, now I think! I tend to prune out any Twitter users I follow who abuse the above too much.
Not so bad Twittequette
I was tempted to add ‘massaging your ego’ too, but then Twitter is 99% ego, and I’m definitely guilty of that one!
Anyone else have any pet peeves or particularly hated bad Twitter etiquette?
